Florida passed a new law in 2019 that makes texting and driving a primary offense and many of us have said it's about time. In 2018 51,000 traffic accidents were blamed on distracted driving. That's an average of a hundred and forty crashes every day and with I-95 running through the Treasure Coast, this area has seen its share. AAA got behind the new law after its own study uncovered frightening statistics one a driver's eyes are off the road an average of five seconds while texting. At 55 miles per hour that would be the equivalent of driving the length of a football field blind. Seventy eight percent of Americans say texting while driving is a significant danger yet 35 percent still admit to doing it and three drivers who text are eight times more likely to be involved in a crash.
