Coronavirus Update #10 - History of Pandemics

History of Pandemics
March 27, 2020

My name is Gloria Seidule. I am a lawyer. This is episode 10 in my coronavirus series. Like many lawyers, I'm a bit of a history buff. The coronavirus is not the first pandemic to hit the world. For those of us alive in 2020 we are all united in being a part of something that has not happened very often in the recorded history of the world.

The bubonic plague spread by rats occurred in the 1300s and it killed almost half the population of Europe. Smallpox occurred in the 1500s and it apparently killed 15 million people. In the early 1900s the Spanish flu killed 40 to 50 million people. All in all, there have been around 20 pandemics recorded that I have been able to research.

So the odds of being part of a pandemic in the recorded history of the world are very low, but here we are living through a pandemic. Keep your cool, be smart and be a patriot. Even if you have not been ordered by the government yet to self isolate, you should. The only way to beat the coronavirus is to keep it from spreading.

Help your fellow humans when they are in need. Stay home, stay safe out there.
